Two Parallelisms within a Chiasm in Matthew 12:9-14

This chiasm in Matthew 12:9-14 is centered on the moral hierarchy implied by the fact that the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

  • A - The Conspiracy
    • v9 - Jesus departed and entered the synagogue
      • v10 - The Pharisees conspire to accuse him of working on the Sabbath
    • B - Jesus speaks
      • v11 - Jesus speaks
        • A sheep rescued from a pit
      • C - v12a - A Man is better than a sheep
      • C - v12b - Lawful to do good on the Sabbath
    • B - Jesus speaks
      • v13 - Jesus speaks
        • A man rescued from infirmity
  • A - The Conspiracy
    • v14 - The Pharisees departed and entered a conspiracy
      • The Pharisees conspire to destroy himV9 – Yeshua went to the synagogue on the Sabbath

Since the Sabbath was created to restore mankind, it should never be used to prevent that restoration. The Sabbath command of Exodus 20 also implies that the Sabbath was created to restore man's animals.

I found this chiasm during a demonstration at Common Sense Bible Study.
